Fire Extinguishers are a mandatory requirement under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Extinguishers are for the use on potential fire risks which have been identified through a Fire Risk assessment or by the competent  person. Every building must have a minimum of two Class A rated extinguishers per floor.

Just having Fire Extinguisher is not enough, equipment needs to be serviced and maintained by a trained and qualified fire extinguisher engineer in accordance with British Standard 5306.

Fire extinguisher types and classes of fires:

There are a different types of fire extinguishes that have been designed to tackle the classes of fire that can occur in your premises. It is essential to have the correct extinguishers in place to cover the fire risks, this is determined by a fire risk assessment which should specify what class of fire poses the biggest fire risk in each area of your business.

The types of fire have been split into classes A,B,C, D and F (live electrical fires are displayed by a lightning bolt)

  • Class A – Fires involving paper, wood, textiles and other combustible materials
  • Class B – Fires involving flammable liquids (paints, solvents and oils)
  • Class C – Fires involving gases
  • Class D – Fire involving flammable and combustible metals (aluminium and magnesium)
  • Class F – Fire involving cooking oils and fats
